school, but it has served as a middle school since
1970 and now educates sixth through eighth graders
from Hanover and Norwich, Vermont. The school is located
just blocks from the center of town and the Dartmouth
College campus, providing access to people, events,
and facilities of enormous value. The Richmond School
and Hanover High School comprise the Dresden School
District, the first interstate school district in
the United States. It was created by legislation in
both states and received final approval through an
Act of Congress in Washington, D.C. President John
F. Kennedy signed the Inter-State Compact into law
in November of 1963 - the last piece of legislation
signed before his assassination.

Crossroads Academy is an independent day school, committed
to academic and moral excellence. We strive to provide
today's students with the tools they will need to think
clearly, judge responsibly, and act honorably in tomorrow's
world. To that end, we commit ourselves to the following
goals and objectives:
- To teach the core body of knowledge that students
must master in order to function as thoughtful citizens
of the United States and members of the world community.
We subscribe to the concept of "Core Knowledge" as
defined by the Core Knowledge Foundation and explained
in the work of E. D. Hirsch, Jr. We pledge ourselves
to its promotion in the areas of language arts, geography,
world civilization, American civilization, fine arts,
science and technology, mathematics and religion.
- To cultivate the learning skills necessary for success
in scholarship and daily life; critical thinking,
problem-solving, decision-making, communication, research,
and scholarship.
- To promote the moral development of our students
in the Jewish and Christian traditions by recognizing
the existence of absolutes and affirming man's obligations
before God and neighbor; upholding standards of human
interaction based on the virtues of courage, prudence,
temperance, justice, faith, hope, and charity; encouraging
respect for and knowledge about the religious traditions
among us; recognizing Biblical literacy, comparative
religions, moral reasoning, and ethics as critical
educational concerns; fostering the life of the spirit
by encouraging children in prayerful reflection.
- To nurture the personal qualities necessary for
fruitful thought and action; self-worth and self-discipline;
prudence and good judgement; cooperation and collaboration;
creativity and initiative.
- To call students to high standards of learning and
behavior by emphasizing perseverance, diligence, and
concentration; promoting and furthering strong attention
span; expecting students to reach high and ask the
most of themselves; fostering and expecting empathy,
solidarity, and thoughtfulness.
- To promote "democratic literacy" in our students,
that is, to promote an understanding of and attachment
to democratic principles; to cultivate in students
an awareness of their heritage as a free people; and
to promote familiarity with the major theorists and
activists for democracy from Aristotle to Madison;
from Thomas Jefferson to Elizabeth Cady Stanton to
Martin Luther King Jr. To provide a classroom and
school environment that encourages academic and moral
excellence and conveys the worth and dignity of each
child, the excitement and joy of learning, the beauty
and wonder of life - a life that moves beyond self,
the order that is essential to learning and living.

education in local Vermont communities and in innovative
and flexible ways. The College is a public, two-year,
open admissions institution providing degree, transfer,
occupational, and continuing education opportunities.
Special emphasis is given to Vermonters who would otherwise
have limited access to college because of a number of
barriers, including low income, lack of academic preparation,
family obligations, time constraints, or geographic
remoteness. To fulfill its mission, CCV offers classes
in communities throughout Vermont, selects instructors
from within those communities, and draws upon local
resources and facilities.
For thousands of Vermonters, the Community College

The Upper Valley Teacher Institute is a fully accredited
teacher preparation and certification program, based
in classrooms and designed for adult college graduates
who have usually had other careers before deciding to
become teachers. UVTI differs from university postgraduate
programs in education. Since teaching is an art best
learned through practice, UVTI reverses the percentage
of time traditionally allotted to academic theory and
classroom practice. Each participant works full time
as an intern in a classroom under the supervision of
a mentor teacher. This practical experience is reinforced
by weekly seminars and support from supervisors. By
the end of the 10-month training period, graduates have
studied the topics normally covered in conventional
academic programs, and they also have a full year of
teaching experience.
