Situated along the Connecticut River, the residents of Norwich enjoy rural living and a small, but busy, village offering retail and professional services and direct access to I-91. The mix of amenities found in Norwich is exemplified by the Appalachian Trail passing by the downtown National Register Historic District. In addition to a variety of recreational resources, Norwich's rural neighborhoods are only minutes to the major employment.

Norwich currently allows for the following types of business activity: regional distribution, light manufacturing, retail or offices in the Industrial/Commercial District between Route 5 South and I-91. Although the access is excellent, limited septic has kept this area from being fully developed. Local businesses serving the community are allowed in the Village Business District and may be allowed in outlying village centers as they are created. Home occupations and home industries are permitted in the rural area.
