Norwich, Vermont - History

Norwich, one of the prettiest towns in Vermont, was settled in 1761 by a group from Marshfiled, Connecticut. It has always had close ties to Hanover (just across the bridge), with which it shares the Dresden school district. Many Dartmouth faculty members live in Norwich, which was once the home for the American Literary, Scientigfic, and Military Academy founded in 1819 and named Norwich University in 1834; it moved to Northfield after the Civil War. The village is an architectural showcase for fine brick and frame Federal homes. The Seven Nations House across from the Norwich Inn, built as a commercial "tenement" in 1832.
